TfL iBus Accessibility & Severe Sight Loss Inclusion
-
The Issue: Transport for London (TfL) recently rejected a request for a bespoke audio announcement for a key accessibility venue serving individuals with severe sight loss, citing internal data volume constraints and fear of precedent.
-
Why It Matters: For blind and partially sighted Londoners, independent navigation relies on reliable, real-time auditory cues. Dismissing accessibility requests drives transport poverty, social isolation, and avoidable safety risks.
-
Our Action: We have formally escalated this decision to the TfL Commissioner and leadership, demanding that accessibility and human safety take precedence over technical rigidity.

Subject: URGENT Accessibility Campaign: Holding TfL Accountable for Severe Sight Loss Inclusion
Dear Person,
I am writing to you as your constituent and as a passionate supporter of The London Buddy Scheme to raise an urgent concern regarding transport accessibility and TfL’s recent failure to meet the needs of disabled Londoners.
Recently, a request was submitted to Transport for London (TfL) for a bespoke audio announcement on the iBus system for a key accessibility venue serving individuals with severe sight loss. TfL Customer Services rejected the request, claiming custom announcements would create unmanageable data volumes.
This response is unacceptable. For blind and partially sighted residents, dependable audio information is a fundamental lifeline required to navigate our city safely, independently, and with dignity.
As my representative, I urge you to:
-
Make direct representations to Transport for London (TfL) to challenge this decision and demand a dynamic review of iBus accessibility announcements.
-
Champion the Social Model of disability in local and regional transport forums.
Yours sincerely,
Person
